Three injured police officers were airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment following a raid at Elram Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) at Kotulo in Mandera county after suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked their camp in Mandera South.
The three, CI. Onesmus Wandera (D/OC), Apc. Gocha Gracius, and Apc. Moses Mathenge got injured by flying pellets from the bombs.
The attack took place yesterday afternoon whereby suspected Al-Shabaab militants hurled missiles into the police’s security camp in the Mandera South.
“Today at around 3 pm Al-Shabaab militants attacked Astu ElRam camp using six HE bombs, PKM rifles. During the attack three officers got injured by flying pellets from the bombs,” the report said.
According to a police report, the attack lasted for about thirty minutes after being repulsed by a fierce exchange of fire from the section which was just out on foot patrols under the command of the OCE.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) jet fighters from Wajir were called in and bombarded the area for the better part of yesterday evening.
“KDF jet fighter from Wajir has bombarded the area after being contacted to reinforce the ASTU personnel,” stated the police.
The camp is located less than 10km from the Kenya-Somalia border.
