A team of educators from Jinja, Uganda who recently paid a visit to Mount Kenya University (MKU) as part of an educational benchmarking tour to Kenya were thrilled and left both inspired and impressed by the university’s world-class learning environment.
Accompanied by David Kigenyi and Meddy Mbelyo, both members of the Board of Governors at Jinja School, the delegation were on a mission to explore innovative academic models and forge stronger regional educational ties with MKU.
From the onset, the Ugandan educators were captivated by MKU’s exceptional learning infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and unwavering commitment to research and quality education.
Some were so taken aback by the sheer scale and standard of the facilities that they initially assumed MKU was one of Kenya’s top public universities a testament to the institution’s outstanding reputation and delivery.
Their surprise turned to admiration upon learning that MKU is, in fact, a privately chartered university making waves not just in Kenya, but across East Africa including Uganda.
The teachers also expressed deep appreciation for MKU’s strategic investment in virtual education through the recently launched Open, Distance and Electronic Learning (ODeL) Centre in Uganda. The center aims to make higher education more accessible to Ugandan students, particularly those balancing work, family, or living in remote areas.
“This initiative is not just timely — it’s transformational,” remarked Meddy Mbelyo.
“By bringing learning closer to home through digital platforms, MKU is directly impacting the future of education in Uganda.”
Beyond the impressive infrastructure and academic programs, the visit served as a bridge to deepen collaboration between educators in Uganda and Kenya. The delegation emphasized the value of such exchanges in fostering innovation, professional development, and institutional growth across the region.
As the visit came to a close, the Ugandan teachers left with glowing praise for MKU’s leadership, vision, and regional impact.
