Deadly crusade tithe collection as two in court for threatening to kill Nyumba Kumi official

Dan Sabati and Lameck Ouma are accused of threatening to end life of Kalvince Ochieng

Two men arrested for allegedly issuing death threats to a Nyumba Kumi official who intervened to stop them from demanding tithe from crusade organisers in Huruma, Nairobi, are facing charges of threatening to kill contrary to section 223 (1) of the Penal Code.

Dan Sabati and Lameck Ouma are accused of threatening to end life of Kalvince Ochieng.

However, they denied the charges while appearing before Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Rotich on June 27, 2025.

The duo were among a gang of eight who stormed a crusade and demanded a share of collections from pastors conducting prayers in the area on June 18, 2025 before Ochieng intervened.

They had forcefully stormed the crusade allegedly demanding money from worshippers and pastors leading the crusade for hosting the worship event in their (the suspects’) territory.

They later followed Ochieng to his shop where they demanded money from him after failing to get a share from the pastors hosting the crusade, and allegedly issued the threats.

The two suspected that Ochieng had been given money to provide security to the worshipers during the crusade before they followed him.

“On June 18, 2025, at Huruma Ngei Area within Mathare Sub County, jointly with others still at large without lawful excuse threatened to kill (Ochieng) by throwing stones at him and uttering words “if you don’t give us money we shall come with gun and shoot you”,” reads the charges. Prosecution believes these utterances amount to threats to Ochieng’s life.

Ochieng was rescued by fellow businessmen who are also members of Nyumba Kumi, who teamed up against the suspected gangsters.
