SRC to review civil servants allowances by April 2022

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has directed all public institutions to submit lists of all allowances payable to civil servants for review.

In a statement, SRC chairperson Lyn Cherop Mengich said it will analyze and advise on the new structure of allowances for civil servants by the end of April 2022.

She said the reviewed allowances would be implemented at different stages.

“When we issue guidelines, we will not have them implemented at the same time,” Mengich said.

The commission has restructured the allowances from 247 to five broad categories.

State agencies that fail to submit the lists their allowances will cease to apply.

According to Mengich, at the moment the bill has not passed and they will take the necessary steps when that happens.

The Commission had announced that it will initiate measures to tame the country’s public wage bill.

SRC wants to cap allowances not more than 40 per cent of the monthly gross pay for state employees according to reports.

The state employees get allowances such as medical allowance, entertainment allowance, and utility allowance to cater to water, electricity, airtime, and security bills which are under the workers’ basic pay.
