Speaker Muturi contradicts OKA chiefs on joining the alliance

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has dismissed reports that he is joining One Kenya Alliance (OKA) in the quest to form the next government.

Speaking after the Democratic Party of Kenya National Executive Committee (NEC) at a Nairobi hotel, Muturi said he is not in coalition talks with OKA.

This comes after a recent visit by OKA Principals; Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya) and Cyrus Jirongo(UDP) to his Nairobi residence last week.

“They visited me as longtime friends to tell me sorry and wish me quick recovery. Rumors are just that rumors. Those who respect democracy must wait for concurrence from the party and in essence the relevant organs in the party,” said Muturi.

The speaker said that such an arrangement can only be ratified by the party and not a single individual adding that should a decision be made to join OKA, then it will be announced by the party.

“The decision of me engaging other parties in coalition talks can only be made by the top decision-making organ of DP. I cannot make that decision as an individual. Today is the NEC of the party so if there was anything like that you would have been officially told about it,” he said.

The OKA chiefs visit to Muturi’s residence gave the clearest indication that Muturi will join force  to form a third coalition.

Both Mudavadi and Musyoka said that the leaders were working on a political agreement for the 2022 polls.

Kalonzo through his social media account said, “He (Muturi) is recuperating well and ready for the next leg of our journey.”
