Sifuna heads to court to block ouster as ODM Secretary as party row deepens

Sifuna argued that the latest attempt to remove him mirrored an earlier effort made in February, which was successfully challenged in court, and insisted that the NEC’s actions were procedurally flawed.

The rift pitting rival factions within the Orange Democratic Movement ((ODM) escalated today after ousted Secretary General who also doubles as the Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna resolved  to challenge the decision by the ODM’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to remove him from his position as Secretary General, setting the stage for a fresh legal and political dispute within the party.

Speaking during a press briefing within Parliament buildings today, Tuesday, June 23, 2026,  Sifuna said the decision to pursue legal action followed consultations with his legal team, which concluded that the removal process was unconstitutional and violated both the party’s constitution and principles of procedural fairness.

“After consultation with our legal teams earlier this morning, it has been decided once again to test the propriety of the purported ouster in the courts because we are convinced it should suffer the same fate as the first one in February,” he said.

He was flanked by Linda Mwananchi team led by Suba South Member of Parliament Caroli Omondi among others.

Sifuna argued that the latest attempt to remove him mirrored an earlier effort made in February, which was successfully challenged in court, and insisted that the NEC’s actions were procedurally flawed.

The ODM National Executive Committee had earlier resolved to remove Sifuna from office following recommendations from the party’s Internal Disputes Resolution Mechanism (IDRM), which handled complaints filed against him in his capacity as Secretary General.

The party maintained that the disciplinary process was conducted in accordance with its constitution and cited prior directions from the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), which it said allowed the proceedings to continue.

However, Sifuna and his allies have rejected the decision, arguing that the process failed to meet constitutional and procedural requirements.

In a separate statement issued by his Linda Mwananchi team, Sifuna said the NEC decision was “unprocedural, unfair and contrary to the party’s constitution,” adding that it closely resembled the earlier contested attempt to remove him from office.

The statement confirmed that Sifuna had resolved to return to court to seek legal redress, expressing confidence that the latest decision would be overturned just as the previous one was.

The NEC’s announcement of Sifuna’s removal on Monday, June 22, 2026, has further deepened internal divisions within ODM, with the dispute now expected to be resolved through the courts.
