Shujaa boosted by return of two stars ahead of Perth Sevens leg

Kenya Shujaa squad to the HSBC Perth Sevens in Australia has been named by Head Coach Kevin Wambua who has rung two changes.

Influential duo Vincent Onyala (KCB RFC) and scrum half Brian Tanga of Kabras Sugar RFC return from injury having missed the opening legs of Cape Town and Dubai. Among the travelling list include the two co—captains Samuel Asati of KCB and George Ooro of Strathmore Leos.

Others are Dennis Abukuse (Menengai Oilers),William Mwanja,Nygel Amaitsa (Strathmore Leos),Anthony Omondi (Mwamba RFC), Patrick Odongo (Daystar Falcons),Benson Salem (Nondescripts RFC),Floyd Wabwire (Daystar Falcons) and Festus Shiasi (KCB RFC).

Shujaa are in Pool C with Fiji, New Zealand and Uruguay and the team begins their mission next Friday. Their first duel is a tricky one against tasty New Zealand on Friday 24 (January), at 6am followed by another tricky tie against Fiji at 10:59am. The final pool match will be Saturday 25 (January 25) against physical Uruguay.

Shujaa kicked off the World Series at 10th place in Dubai where they gathered 3 points, in the second leg, Cape Town 7s, they stormed into the Cup quarterfinals where they lost 14-26 to Argentina in the 5th Place semifinal. Dropping to 7th place playoff, they emerged victorious with a 32-17 victory over Great Britain. They head to Australia in 9th position overall.

The team is currently in a residential camp preparing for the Perth 7s. Shujaa Co-Captain Samuel Asati of Kenya Commercial Bank RFC stated that the camp was very beneficial for the team.

“Having the boys in one place focusing on training brought us together, we’re able to work on the tactical bits of the sport and this has improved our performance. Additionally, having Onyala and Tanga back is a plus as they bring in a lot of leadership within the set up together with Tony,” said Asati.
