Sh20million cash bonanza: Shabana’s Ruto windfall spark questions over public money handling
Shabana FC has received the full Sh20million pledged by President William Ruto to support the club during its temporary relocation to Afraha Stadium, but the shocking display of huge bundles of cash during the handover has raised fresh questions about how large public financial commitments are disbursed and handled.
The club confirmed receipt of the final Sh10million on Wednesday, August 19, completing the Sh20million pledge announced by Ruto earlier this year.
The balance was handed to the club through its patron, Kisii Governor Simba Arati.
In a letter addressed to President Ruto, Shabana Secretary General Dr Elizaphan Kerama thanked the Head of State for honouring his commitment.
“We are grateful to formally acknowledge receipt, through H.E Team Patron Governor Simba Arati, of the Sh10 million balance of the Sh20 million you pledged to support Shabana FC during our relocation to Afraha Stadium,” Kerama said.
The payment brings to an end the President’s financial commitment to the club as it seeks an alternative home venue while its traditional ground, Gusii Stadium, undergoes reconstruction.
However, attention has shifted to the extraordinary sight of large bundles of cash displayed during the handover, with the spectacle prompting questions over why millions of shillings had to be physically presented in such a manner.
The Sh20million pledge was made by Ruto in April 2026 when he launched the Sh1 billion upgrade of Gusii Stadium.
The project is expected to transform the facility to international standards, including a FIFA-standard pitch, an eight-lane running track and seating capacity of about 14,000 spectators.
Ruto also donated a new team bus valued at approximately Sh27 million to Shabana during the event.
Kerama said the support demonstrated Ruto’s commitment to sports development, youth empowerment and the growth of Kenyan football.
But the cash spectacle has placed the spotlight on financial accountability.
