Senator Gloria Orwoba call for audit over alleged financial misappropriation at MCK
Nominated senator Gloria Magoma Orwoba has moved a private member statement into the audit of alleged financial misappropriation at the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) by the Senate Standing Committee on Information Communication and Technology (ICT).
Orwoba noted that there has been reports of alleged financial misappropriation but the matter is yet to be addressed publicly.
“I rise pursuant to Standing Order 53 (1), to seek a Statement from the Standing Committee on Information, Communication and technology on allegations of management of the Media Council of Kenya funds,” she stated.
The nominated senator wants the Committee to attach a copy of MCK’s audited financial results for the past three years when it tables its findings before the Senate.
“In the statement, the committee should table the council’s audited financial statements covering the last three years, shed light on allegations of mismanagement of council funds and disclose irregularities, if any, and give the particulars of those complicit and disciplinary measures preferred against any culpable officials,” she said.
According to Orwoba, the committee should audit the misappropriation of the Covid-19 kitty by the office of the Chief Executive Officer of the media regulator which had been set aside for the training of journalists during the Covid 19 pandemic and days approaching the August 9 general elections.
“In the statement, the committee should investigate reports of alleged diversion of council resources including funds which had been earmarked for the training of journalists during COVID-19 and general election period as well as deployment of money and motor vehicles to the office of the CEO,” she stated.
Orwoba also urged the committee to investigate cases of alleged nepotism in regard to the recruiting of new employees at MCK.
“The committee should also table board resolutions in regards to training, stating how strictly the council has adhered to its training policy and to investigate reports of nepotism in the recruitment of staff by the media regulator,” she said.
