Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has issued a directive requiring all schools to be closed from tomorrow to August 11 to pave way for the August 9 General Elections.
According to Magaoha, this will enable the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to prepare the schools for election as some of them are used as polling stations.
“As you are all aware, Kenya is scheduled to conduct general elections on the 9th of August 2022. I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the immediate closure of all basic learning institutions with effect from Tuesday 2nd August 2022 until Wednesday 10th August 2022 to ensure that preparations and conduct of the upcoming elections are carried out seamlessly,” stated Magoha.
However, if the elections were to be repeated as was the case with the 2017 General Elections, Magoha said the ministry will have a meeting with the relevant stakeholders to discuss the matter.
“Should there be a repeat election during my tenure which I hope will not happen, then we will sit with stakeholders and see whether it will be fair to examine the children if they would have lost a considerable amount of time,” he said.
The CS issued a warning against crooked politicians who were planning to use learning institutions as political grounds to acquire support and promote their political agendas.
