Sakaja resume campaigns amid degree saga

Nairobi United Democratic Alliance (UDA) gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja has resumed his meet-the-people campaign despite an ongoing investigation on the legitimacy of his degree.

Today the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Dispute Resolution Committee, directed by Wafula Chebukati, began hearings on the subject at the Milimani Law courts.

Sakaja posted images on social media of himself meeting with Gikomba traders.

“Great discussions held with the leadership of importers and traders of Mitumba from Gikomba. We have committed to protect and ensure a pro-enterprise Nairobi,” he said.

The senator has made waves after the IEBC received objections about the legitimacy of his educational credentials.

A non-governmental organization (NGO) has so far requested that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigate the authenticity of Sakaja’s degree certificate.

The Youth Advocacy Africa, alleged through its lawyers that they had enough information to prove Sakaja’s Team University degree was obtained unlawfully.

The NGO claimed in the letter that Sakaja was never admitted to the institution, never took any exams, never graduated, and has no academic credentials from the abovementioned university.

“Our client is certain that the Degree Certificate issued to Sakaja is the product of illegality and collusion with key staff from Teams University who have been induced unlawfully to dish out the degree certificate,” reads the letter.

The petitioners in four aggregated appeals urged the Resolution Committee to invalidate Sakaja’s eligibility to run in the August elections.

Dennis Wahome, one of the petitioners, notes that Sakaja’s degree, which he allegedly obtained from Uganda’s Team University, was faked.

Wahome states in an affidavit that the certificate was printed on Sunday.

Sakaja insisted that his degree was authentic and sought the IEBC to dismiss a complaint about it.

The Nairobi Senator contends that his opponents purposefully deleted the relevant portions of the graduation booklet that featured his name.
