Ruto to attend much anticipated Presidential debate
Kenya Kwanza Director of Communications Hussein Mohammed has confirmed that presidential candidate William Ruto will attend the upcoming Presidential Debate set for next Tuesday, July 26.
According to Ruto, the presidential hopeful is ready to tackle any question that will be posed to him by the journalists moderating the event.
“Ruto is ready for any question which will be posed to him by the journalists moderating the event,” said Mr. Hussein Mohamed,
The latest unfolding means Ruto will participate in the much-anticipated exercise which will see him and political nemesis Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga go toe to toe in the debate.
The Kenya Kwanza campaign team further urged the debate’s secretariat to ensure the debate will be moderated well, and that enough time be allocated toward the ‘real’ issues affecting the people of Kenya.
“We have made a formal request to the Presidential Debates secretariat to make public the time allocation to issues affecting Kenyans, including governance and integrity, agriculture, healthcare, MSMEs, manufacturing, housing, digital economy, foreign policy, and so on,” said Kenya Kwanza’s director of communications.
The presidential debate will be held at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa, in Nairobi on Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 10:00pm.
The meeting will be a joint television broadcast and will be conveyed twofold; the first one will involve candidates with less than 5% approval ratings (Root Party’s Prof. George Wajackoyah and Agano Party candidate Waihiga Mwaure) and second will involve those with 5% and above (Deputy President William Ruto and the former premier Raila Odinga).
The latest confirmation comes days after the running mate debate between Martha Karua and Rigathi Gachagua as the two trated barbs in a heated debate.
Gachagua and Karua differed sharply with the issues of integrity coming at the centre of the debate.
Karua, a former Justice minister, described herself as an honest and hard-working Kenyan, who does not believe in primitive accumulation of wealth.
Rigathi, whose Sh200 million assets have been frozen by the court over suspicion of being proceeds of graft, maintained he, too, was clean.
