Ruto makes more strides in campaigns for Raila’s bid for AUC chairman seat

Raila Odinga’s bid to become the next Africa Union Commission Chairperson has received a timely boost following President William Ruto receiving assurances of support from the governments of Togo and Equatorial Guinea.

Ruto, who was in Ghana to attend the inauguration of Ghana’s President John Dramani-Mahama yesterday, had a chance to sell the candidature of the former Kenyan Prime Minister to Togolese leader Faure Gnassingbe, President Gideon Boko of Botswana and also the Vice-President of neighbouring Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.

In the sideline meetings with the leaders, President Ruto said Africa’s future will be shaped by inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders on the need for the continent’s transformation.

He cited the reform of the African Union, peace and security, and continental integration as critical in enhancing the role of the private sector in development, especially under the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement.

With only six weeks to go ahead of elections for the AUC top seat, the Opposition leader also continues with his forays across the continent.

The 80-year-old veteran politician on Monday paid a courtesy call to Mauritius Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam to sell his agenda for Africa.

He posted on his X account: “Thank you, Hon. Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius, for hosting me and for your unequivocal support towards my candidature for the African Union Commission Chairperson.”

The  influential seat that carries renewable four year tenure is currently being held by former Chadian Prime Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat who is ending his eight year reign.
