The government on Monday disbursed Sh42 million to Harambee Stars players and the technical bench as promised by President William Ruto following Sunday’s 1-0 win against the DR Congo’s Leopards.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed that the Head of State fulfilled his promise by disbursing the money through Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.
Mohammed added that the team will receive a similar award if they win their game against Angola this week.
“President William Ruto has fulfilled his commitment to pay Sh1 million each to all 27 Harambee Stars players and 15 members of the technical bench, a total of KSh42 million, following the national team’s 1-0 win over the DRC on Sunday. Sports ministry officials, led by Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya delivered the funds, and a similar reward awaits the team after Thursday’s game against Angola,” he stated.
The winning goal by Gor Mahia attacking midfielder was scored in the first half’s added time.
The players received the motivation from President Ruto, who promised the same when he hosted them for breakfast the day before the match, sharing that he would reward them with Sh600 million if they won the coveted trophy.
Further, Ruto promised Sh500,000 to every player for a match they will draw.
Sunday’s match set the tone for what could be a strong campaign for the ongoing tournament.
The mood in the camp remains upbeat with President Ruto maintaining his visible support and fulfillment of promised reward packages.
Harambee Stars Coach Benni McCarthy says the players draw extra inspiration from that backing.
The national team coach’s message is clear that the opening victory is just the beginning, the fans ‘ belief, and the tactical foundation is now firmly in place to propel Harambee Stars to greater heights
