President William Ruto has appointed a 42-member education reform taskforce team to evaluate and review the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
Through a gazette notice, Ruto said that the taskforce has been given six months to complete its work and is expected to issue a progress report after every two months.
The working party on education reform will be chaired by Professor Rafael Munavu, a renowned educationist and lecturer alongside Peter Tabichi, Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor, Paul Wainaina and Stephen Gitaha Kiama both from the University of Nairobi.
“The working party shall invite and consider views from sector stakeholders and members of the public, hold such number of meetings in places and at such times as it shall consider for proper discharge of its functions,” Ruto said.
The team is tasked with the assessment and recommendation of an appropriate CBC implementation structure, study all laws governing basic education and make recommendations for review of the legislation to address duplication, ambiguities, efficiency constraints and improving linkages.
“To Assess and make recommendations of the conceptualization and implementation of key tenets guiding the competency-based approach, including but not limited to, value based education, community service learning, parental empowerment and engagement,”
The new team has also been tasked with assessing the examination framework and also evaluate the teacher education and training framework for both preservice and in-service.
The working party has also been mandated to look into the teachers’ deployment framework and the technology for curriculum delivery, improved learning outcomes and education management.
“To review and recommend appropriate financing framework including capitation and minimum essential package grants for all basic education levels. To review and recommend a framework for physical and infrastructure development and coordination of public-private partnerships for improved access and quality provision,” he said.
The taskforce will also review basic education and recommend appropriate framework on the management and coordination of bursaries and scholarships for secondary school students.
Other members of the task force include David Some, Halima Saado Abdilahi, Ciriaka Gitonga, Purity Mbaabu, Edward Katue Nzinga, Virginia Wahome, Robert Juma Wamalwa, Charles Kyalo Mutinda, Anthony Cheruiyot Sitienei, Bishop Geffrey Waweru Gichoki, Rev Seline Chepngeno Ronoh, Laila Abubakar, Daniel Otieno Randa, John Kamiti Munyua.
Others include Kizito Wangalwa, Augusta Mwihaki Muthigani, Peter Barasa, Ahmed Yussuf, Jone Mose, Hassan Mwakimako, Lynette Mwende Ndile, Wilson Kogo and Stephen Mbugua Ngari.
