Rodri gives Barcelona green light for Manchester City transfer talks
Barcelona have secured Rodrigo Hernández Cascante’s permission to open negotiations with Manchester City over a potential transfer for the Spain midfielder, in a move that could derail Real Madrid’s reported pursuit of the 30-year-old.
A source from the La Liga champions reportedly revealed that Barcelona had taken a significant step towards signing the former Atletico Madrid star after receiving his approval to begin discussions with City.
However, the source cautioned that Rodri’s decision to authorise talks does not guarantee that he will eventually join Barcelona.
Catalan media reports say Barcelona coach Hansi Flick played a key role in persuading Rodri, reportedly speaking to the midfielder by phone as he pushes the club to strengthen an ageing and injury-hit squad.
Barcelona have identified midfield and defensive stability as priorities, particularly with Frenkie de Jong facing an extended absence after suffering a serious knee injury.
Rodri would bring considerable experience and a proven record at the highest level. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has won four Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League with Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, scoring the winning goal in the final against Inter Milan.
He also captained Spain to their second World Cup triumph at this year’s tournament in North America, earning the Golden Ball as the competition’s outstanding player.
City are reportedly prepared to sell Rodri for about €60 million ($69 million), with the midfielder having only one year remaining on his contract.
The proposed transfer could also frustrate Real Madrid, who have reportedly been monitoring Rodri as new manager Jose Mourinho looks to reinforce his midfield.
Rodri’s fitness remains a concern, however. After a series of knee problems, he underwent minor back surgery in late July, casting doubt over his readiness for the start of the new season.
