Radio icon Edward Kwach dies after short illness

Iconic radio presenter Edward Carey Kwach is dead.
His death has been confirmed by his family, who revealed that the veteran radio presenter passed away on Monday night while receiving treatment for meningitis.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey, who passed away last night while receiving treatment for meningitis. Carey touched the lives of many through his voice and presence on the airwaves, becoming a trusted and familiar companion to listeners across the country,” the family said in the statement.
Until his demise, Kwach was the host for Spice Drive at Standard Media Group’s Spice FM.
The family remembered him for his warmth, humour, and exceptional sense of humour, which brought joy to many. They thanked Kenyans for their support when the veteran radio host was unwell.
“His passing is a tremendous loss to all who knew him personally and the many more who connected with him through his work. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support during his illness, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who donated blood, visited, and kept him in their thoughts and prayers,” the family stated.
Further, the Kwach family announced that funeral arrangements and the memorial will be communicated in due course.
“We kindly ask that you keep our family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Funeral and memorial arrangements will be communicated in due course,” the statement added.
Earlier this month, Kwach was admitted to the Coptic hospital while in a critical condition. The family called on well-wishers to donate blood to help stabilise Kwach’s condition.
In her message of condolences, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris described Kwach as a legend whose voice, humour, and spirit defined the golden era of Kenyan radio.
“This year, we’ve lost so many powerful voices in media. Today, another giant goes off air. Edward Kwach a legend whose voice, humour, and spirit defined the golden era of Kenyan radio. He conquered challenges, broke barriers, and shaped the sound of an industry. Thank you, Kwach. Your impact will echo for generations. We salute you. Rest well, champ,” she wrote on X.
Deputy Chief of Staff (Performance and Delivery Management) in the Office of the President Edward Owallo, on his part, noted that with a distinguished career in radio spanning several decades, Kwach was beloved by many and served as an inspiration to countless voices who followed in his footsteps.
“My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues in the media fraternity. May his trailblazing legacy continue to inspire others to carve out their own unique paths in radio.”
Kimilili MP Didimus Barasa described him as a dynamic and gifted radio voice, who leaves an irreplaceable void in the media landscape.
“His untimely departure is deeply felt. Heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and colleagues. May his soul rest in everlasting peace.”
Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo said that the mic may be silent, but Kwach’s spirit will forever whisper in our hearts.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of this true legend of radio and stage. His voice, his wit and his warmth lit up our lives and airwaves, especially through his unforgettable presence on Spice FM. Rest well, Kwach.”
