Prime CS Mudavadi in Kampla for G25 African Coffee Summit, task assigned to DP Gachagua

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi arrived in Kampala, Uganda, to attend the Second G25 African Coffee Summit of Heads of State and government.
Mudavadi jetted out of the country yesterday to represent president William Ruto.
Although president Ruto enjoys the prerogative to decide who represents him in such events, in January this year, president Ruto assigned Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua leadership over coffee sector reforms in a news Executive Order replacing an initial one issued last year.
There has been talks over claims that the DP has been sidelined in representing the president in foreign trips an issue the DP is on record downplaying that he has more important local issues to deal with including eradicating illicit brew and drug abuse.
Under Executive Order 1 of 2023, Ruto also mandated Mudavadi to oversee a docket he named government Delivery Services which ostensibly replaces the Presidential Delivery Unit during his predecessor’s era.
The government of the Republic of Uganda through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries in collaboration with the Inter – African Coffee Organization (IACO) is hosting the 2nd G25 African Coffee Summit (ACS).
The summit will be held from 7th to 10th August 2023, at the Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kampala, Uganda.
The summit, focusing on transforming the African coffee sector through value addition, aims to address challenges in the coffee value chain and promote sustainable production, research, market access, and consumption through intra-regional trade.
The inaugural G25 Coffee summit was hosted in Nairobi, Kenya May, 2023. Where the Heads of State and Government of the twenty-five (25) coffee-producing countries committed to marshalling consensus for integrating coffee as a strategic Agricultural commodity in the African Union in harmony with the Africa Agenda 2063.
The coffee sub-sector in Kenya continues to play a central role to the national economy and contributes 0.28 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (Economic Survey, 2021).
Coffee is a major source of employment, food security, foreign exchange and generally contributes to the livelihood of many Kenyans and is estimated to support over 5 million Kenyans.
Among other duties assigned to DP Gachagua is to oversight coffee sector reforms spearheaded by the Coffee Sub-Sector Reforms Implementation Standing Committee in addition to functions domiciled in the Office of the Deputy President.
The office’s constitutional functions include being a principal assistance to the President and chairing the Inter-Government Budget and Economic Council (IBEC).
Gachagua also chairs the International Development Partnership Coordination and National and County governments Honours Advisory Committee.
Additionally, he chairs the Nairobi Rivers Commission, which is spearheading efforts to clean and reclaim Nairobi rivers.
