President Kenyatta nominates four commissioners to fill IEBC vacant positions

President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated four individuals to be members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The President has nominated Francis Wanderi, Justus Abonyo, Juliana Cherera and Irene Cherop for IEBC commissioner slots.

The names have already been submitted to parliament where the justice and legal affairs committee will vet them before their formal appointment.

“The Head of State having received the report of the Selection Panel for the appointment of the Commissioners for the IEBC…is now seeking the approval of the National Assembly on the appointment,” Speaker Justin Muturi said.

“I hereby refer the message together with the Curriculum Vitae of the 4 nominees before the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs for the Committee (JLAC) to undertake the necessary approval hearings.”

Muturi said the committee should expeditiously notify the nominees and the public of the time and place for holding the approval hearings.

Upon conclusion of the exercise, table its report in the House in good time to enable MPs to consider the matter within stipulated timelines.

The national assembly is expected to vet the four and table a report within 28 days.

The four will fill the vacant positions left after the resignation of Roselyn Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat and Connie Maina.

The IEBC has been operating with just the chairman and two commissioners for three years.
