Politicians warned against campaigning before set timelines

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned politicians against campaigning before set timelines.

In a news briefing, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said that the increased political activities are causing unnecessary tension.

He urged politicians to stop running unlawful campaigns, saying that the official campaign period is clearly outlined in the Elections Operations.

“IEBC has noted with concern the heightened political activities prior to the declaration of campaigns for the General Election which is causing unnecessary tension in the country,” Chairman Wafula Chebukati said.

Politicians have been taking advantage of churches and burial gatherings to campaign for their 2022 polls.
At the same time, the commission, said they need timely and sufficient disbursement of funds to facilitate the implementation of planned programmes.
IEBC also appealed to security agencies to collaborate with the Commission to ensure a secure environment for the conduct of elections.
“The Commission would like to assure the public and stakeholders that it will continue working as a team to deliver a credible General Election,” stated Chebukati.

The commission, which reaffirmed its mission to deliver credible elections in 2022, urged security authorities to ensure that elections are held in a secure environment.

The commission aims to register at least 6,000,000 new voters at the County Assembly level.

Chebukati welcomed the four new Commissioners who were appointed to join IEBC following a rigorous recruitment process.

“They have also been introduced to the IEBC Senior Management staff at the Headquarters as well as the County Election Managers,” Chebukati said.

“The knowledge and experiences shared by the Consultants, Commissioners and Senior Management from both headquarters and the field will enable the new Commissioners to settle in their assignment.”
