Political parties have until May 12, 2022 at 5 pm to submit their list of nominated persons in accordance with the two-third gender principle as per the requirement of the constitution.
Some of the political parties that are yet to achieve the gender parity requirement include Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Azimio presidential aspirant Raila Odinga’s ODM.
Other parties yet to abide by the law include Jubilee Party, Amani National Congress, The Service Party, Movement for Growth and Democracy (MDG) party, Narc and Narc Kenya.
IEBC records indicate that forty-one parties have failed the gender test on their National Assembly nominees.
While another thirty-three political parties failed to comply with the requirement for gender parity in their nomination of representative in the Senate.
The law allows for the IEBC to penalize parties yet to achieve the two-third gender requirement by stopping them from contesting in the 2022 general election.
“Non-compliant political parties will not participate in the 2022 General Election for the said elective positions,” IEBC boss said.
Earlier, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati had said that at least 81 parties had shown interest in contesting in the 2022 poll.
However, only 48 have met the gender requirement in respect of Senate races, while 38 have achieved the rule in respective of the 290 National Assembly seats.
According to the analysis by IEBC all affected parties have less than a third of their nominees as women.
