Political competition blamed for encouraging corruption

The culture of show off and tendency to compete amongst men in leadership positions including MPs has been blamed for encouraging corruption and brooding bad governance in the country.

Launda MP Christopher Omulele conceded that indeed his male colleagues in the national assembly have been engaging in massive plunder of public resources which results from mere competition and “show off of financial muscle.”

The legislator observed that leaders predominantly male politicians have set up a trend of “attempting to outdo each other in a financial show of mighty” and in the long run end up siphoning public funds at the expense of social development.

The lawmaker observed further that although the African tradition appears to favour men to be in leadership positions than women, “women perform better whenever they are leadership as they engage in less corruption.”

“For us men and especially in Africa, we have this need to compete and appear to achieve more than other people at whatever cost…and this is why we are more likely to engage in corrupt practices than women,” he noted.

The legislator was addressing during the opening of the 21st Annual International conference of The Institute of certified Public Secretaries of Kenya at a hotel in Mombasa whose theme was “Good governance as a foundation for socio-economic and political development.”

Added Omulele, “…today we are here and we see how the public can be excited at seeing those in the society who can fly in in choppers and huge motorcades and appear to wield wealth…but we never stop and ask them questions on how they amassed the so called wealth…”

According to the MP who represented National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as chief guest at the function, most of the male politicians have deceived the unsuspecting public to actually believe that parliament is a place where they go to earn millions within a very short time while in real sense they are more than guilty of embezzling public resources.
