Othaya celebrates scouting leader honoured with top U.S. award
Kenya Scouts Association (KSA) International Commissioner Anthony Gitonga held a colourful thanksgiving celebration in his home village of Othaya, Nyeri County, after receiving a prestigious international award for his outstanding contribution to youth and community development through scouting.
Gitonga was recently honoured with the Silver World Award by the United States government and the Institute of Scouting in America.
The award, presented during the Silver Buffalo Awards Dinner in Florida last month, recognises individuals who have made a significant global impact through the scouting movement.
It is one of the highest international accolades in scouting and is reserved exclusively for non-U.S. citizens.
Gitonga said he chose to celebrate the award with the people of Othaya in appreciation of their role in shaping his leadership journey.
“I am very excited and thought it wise not to keep this moment to myself. It is truly a prestigious honour, and I wanted to share it with my people back home,” said Gitonga during the ceremony held at the Othaya Approved Grounds over the weekend.
He added: “This award is not just about me. It is for Othaya and everyone who helped mould me. To the youth of Othaya and beyond, stay true to your passion and talents. Someone will recognize your efforts.”
The Silver World Award has been awarded to only a few Kenyans since its inception in 1971.
Among the past recipients are Kenya’s founding President Jomo Kenyatta and his predecessor Daniel arap Moi.
Gitonga now joins that exclusive list, along with KSA Chief Commissioner Victor Radido with whom he was awarded with in Florida.
Popularly known as “Antogito” among locals, Gitonga is also the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Anthony Gitonga Foundation, an organization focused on empowering communities through education, health, agriculture, youth mentorship, and community service.
“Through my foundation, we have been able to support many people in Othaya and beyond. This award is a reflection of what we’ve achieved together as a community,” he said.
Gitonga’s recognition serves as an inspiration not only to scouts but also to young people across Kenya, reinforcing the message that grassroots efforts can earn global respect and acknowledgment.
