Optimism for justice as Bunge La Mwananchi serve AG Oduor with case files against state

Social Justice Organisation Bunge la Mwananchi has expressed optimism about Kenyans finding justice from the recent police brutality and killings stirred by the anti-government protests.

The civil society stated that with the takeover by Dorcas Oduor as the Attorney General, there is hope for the victims from their petition filed at the East Africa court to get justice.

Speaking after serving the AG with the petition filed at the regional court, Bunge la Mwananchi president Francis Awino said with Odour having been a good prosecutor before, there is hope of justice for protest victims.

“We expect that Dorcas will follow in the footsteps of AG Githu Muigai. We believe we will find justice because the new AG promised to stand with Kenyans and that’s why we served her today with the case files.” Awino stated.

“It is her time not to jeopardize her good career by being the best prosecutor to now the AG.” He added.

On August 5, 2024, Bunge la Mwananchi through their president Francis Owino filed a case at the regional East Africa Court requesting the court to hold the president, his deputy, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, Nairobi regional Commander Adamson Bungei and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Japhet Koome culpable of the deaths and brutality faced by Kenyans during the anti-government protests.

“The applicant respectfully requests the court to grant an order holding the respondent and the following person responsible for the deaths and injuries sustained by Kenyans during the constitutional protests.” The petition stated in part.

In the petition, Awino also seeks to ensure the AG initiates the necessary processes to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the human rights violations committed by the police.

They also sought an order to bar the state against all forms of violence against demonstrators and ensure their safety and freedom.

The state through the AG is expected to file a response as directed by the court within forty-five days starting August 5, 2024.

In the case, the state is accused of violating human rights by use of force and even killing and leaving others with severe injuries during the recent protests.
