Opposition leaders craft Kibaki-style strategy to oust Ruto in 2027 polls

Opposition’s United Alternative Government (UAG) leaders are reportedly crafting a new political strategy aimed at replicating the winning formula used by former late President Mwai Kibaki during the historic 2002 general election, insiders now say.

They include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (DCP), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper party), Fred Matiang’I (Jubilee Party), Eugene Wamalwa (D-APK Party) and JB Muturi of Democracy Party as well as Peter Munya’s PNU Party.

According to political insiders in the know, the two leaders are exploring a broad coalition approach designed to unite opposition forces ahead of the next general election.

The strategy seeks to mirror the model that propelled Kibaki to power when a united opposition front defeated the then ruling party after decades of dominance.

“A great and consequential 2027 formula that will make Ruto a one-term president in Kenya’s history is in the works,” an impeccable source told The Informer Media Group.

Sources familiar with the discussions say the plan revolves around building a strong alliance that cuts across regional and political divides.

The idea is to consolidate various opposition figures under one umbrella, allowing them to present a single formidable challenger against the incumbent administration.

Political pundits say the “Kibaki-style victory” model refers to the formation of a broad coalition similar to the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which brought together several opposition leaders and parties in 2002.

The alliance succeeded in ending the long rule of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) after opposition leaders rallied behind Kibaki as the single presidential candidate.

Insiders indicate that the ongoing consultations amongst the opposition leaders are part of wider behind-the-scenes efforts to reshape the opposition landscape.

“The discussions include strategies on coalition building, grassroots mobilisation and identifying a joint presidential ticket capable of galvanising nationwide support,” another insider added.
