ODM party to hold party primaries in April

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced that it will hold its party primaries between April 1 and April 21, 2022.

Through a statement, ODM’s National Elections Board (NEB) chairperson Catherine Muma stated that the party will conduct the nominations through universal suffrage with registered party members allowed to participate in their respective electoral areas.

The elections will be carried out in various counties, starting with Nakuru and Turkana on April 1 before culminating in Nairobi on April 21.

“The exercise will also be conducted in Narok and Kajiado (April 2nd), Kilifi and Tana River (April 4th), Taita Taveta and Kwale (April 5th), Mombasa (April 6th), Kisii and Nyamira (April 7th),” read part of the statement.

It will also be conducted in Vihiga and Busia (April 12th), Kisumu (April 13th), Siaya (April 14th), Bungoma and Trans Nzoia (April 15th), Migori (April 16th), Homa Bay (April 18th) and Kakamega (April 19th).

Meanwhile, Muma also said it is in the process of finalising vetting of the applications for various elective positions, with the list of eligible candidates set to be made public on the party’s website in due course.

Earlier, the party indicated that candidates would be handed direct tickets based on their performance in opinion polls commissioned by Chungwa House.

IEBC had initially set April 22, 2022 as the last day to hold primaries, a date that could have allowed aspirants to quit their parties and run as independent candidates.

This has, however, changed after the IEBC pushed the primaries dates to May 26.

IEBC election plans require independent candidates to submit their symbols or letters if they intend to contest as well as clear with the Registrar of Political parties by May 2, 2022.

The Commission also requires an independent candidate who is a member of a political party to quit the party at least three months to the election date.
