Azimio One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga has affirmed his commitment to democracy, and peaceful means to resolve the presidential poll dispute.
According to Raila, he committed to ensuring stability in the country and region through a phone call with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
“I gave Guterres (UN Secretary-General) the assurance that Kenya’s democracy must mature and that we are determined to pursue legal and constitutional means to resolve the disputes that we have,” Odinga said while speaking today at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation offices at Upper Hill.
The head of the Azimio presidential campaign Ndiritu Muriithi urged for democratic elections in Kakamega, Mombasa, and constituencies that are expected to vote in the coming week.
“We encourage the country and our supporters to stand tall as we put greater effort to ensure that we are building better democratic practices for our country. We must be able to go beyond the rituals we’ve had previously and be able to conduct meaningful democratic elections,” Muriithi said.
Odinga disputed poll results by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati who declared William Ruto as president-elect.
The Azimio team has been campaigning for Mombasa and Kakamega gubernatorial candidates for the elections which will be held on Monday.
The former Prime Minister’s presence has buoyed the party’s campaigns in a county facing a political onslaught from Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The elections which were to be held during on August 9 were pushed forward to August 23 after the commission realised a mistake in the ballot papers printed however the elections will be held on Monday 29 August 2022.
