Oburu Odinga retires from active politics

Nominated Member of Parliament Oburu Odinga has announced plans to retire from active politics, a day after he bowed out of the nomination to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

He said he had withdrawn his candidature for nomination to EALA and will instead concentrate on campaigning for his brother, the former Prime minister Raila Odinga to capture the presidency.

Raila, who is his young brother has been nominated as the National Super Alliance (Nasa) presidential candidate for the August 8 polls.

The former premier came under heavy criticism from Kenyans and the political class for fronting his brother Oburu as one of the opposition nominees to the East African states parliament at the expense of other deserving Kenyans.

Oburu suffered a humiliating defeat during the ODM party primaries when he lost the Bondo constituency ODM nominations to incumbent Gideon Ochanda who garnered 28,446 votes. Oburu managed to get 4,000 votes.

He said that he had withdrawn his application for EALA seat and was now planning his retirement from active politics.

Although Oburu did not give timelines for his retirement, he stated that he will not contest for any political position in the coming polls saying his main mission will be to ensure his brother Raila becomes the next president.
