Obure, Kyungu and Bundotich acquitted in Anglo leasing case

A Nairobi court has today freed former Finance Minister Christopher Obure, former Transport Permanent Secretary Sammy Kyungu, and ex-Finance Secretary Samuel Bundotich in the Anglo Leasing graft case.

This is after the prosecution failed to prove the Sh928 million case against the three, according to trial magistrate Ann Mwangi.

“All of this has now come to an end, and the truth has finally come out,” Obure remarked outside the court after the ruling.

According to the magistrate, “we did not gain from any of the decisions we made or the contracts we signed during that time.”

In September of last year, the court determined that the three had a case to answer in the Anglo leasing scam involving the procurement of VSAT satellites for Kenya’s Postal Corporation (PCK).

They were charged with a variety of offenses between March and July 2002, including abuse of office and public trust breach.

Eighteen State security contracts were allegedly issued without due diligence testing on the providers, according to the controversy.

The agreements were bloated, according to the prosecution, and contracts were not carried out, causing the country to lose billions of shillings.
