Nyeri teachers to protest if governor is not sworn in by midday

Teachers in Nyeri have said they will demonstrate if the new governor is not sworn by Friday midday.

Led by area Knut chair Patrick Karinga, they questioned why Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga has not already taken office as per the constitution.

“It seems there is a lacuna in Nyeri since there has been a delay in swearing in the fourth governor. We are very much perturbed by the delay,” executive secretary Zachary Mathenge said on Thursday.

Kahiga’s swearing in was postponed indefinitely following the death of Governor Wahome Gakuru on Tuesday.

Gakuru, 51, died in Thika Level Five Hospital after a grisly car accident near Kabati on the Thika-Muranga highway.

The transition team had said Kahiga would take oath on Thursday afternoon before High Court judge Jairus Ngaah at 2pm but this was put off.

“Does it mean Kahiga is not equally qualified? He is very much qualified and almost finishing his masters. Let them know that we have the numbers to protest if Kahiga, who is a former teacher, is not sworn in. The constitution must be followed to the letter,” Mathenge said.

Information CEC Muthui Kariuki told journalists on Wednesday that the deputy governor cannot execute any order before the swearing-in.

“The deputy governor was of the view that we first bury the governor but the government must continue to run,” Kariuki said.
