Over 1000 nurses drawn from all health facilities in Nyeri County have downed their tools for a second time due to delayed job promotions.
The nurses, who vowed not to resume work until their grievances are heard, claimed that they have been taken for ride over their promotions by their employer for long and can no longer wait.
Kenya Union of Nurses Nyeri County Branch Secretary Beatrice Nduati said they had gone on strike in August last year over the same issue but resumed duty after being promised that they would be promoted.
“We were told that we would be promoted by September last year and each one of us was taken through interviewing process, something not witnessed in other counties. Nothing has happened until today,” she said.
Ms Nduati instead claimed that the county administration has been taking for a ride by giving unfounded excuses to buy time and deny them their due promotions.
She said that none of them has ever been promoted since 2013, pointing out that their colleagues in other counties were promoted long time ago.
“We shall continue with this strike until such a time when our grievance will be heard and fully addressed to our satisfaction,” she said.
The official however said it was unfortunate that the county leadership was only pleading with nurses to continue working after the lapse of 21 days contained in the strike notice that they had issued.
