Number of As up as 2024 KCSE examination results released

There was remarkable improvement in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations with the number of candidates scoring Grade A increasing to 1,683 compared to 1,216 in 2023.

While releasing the results this morning, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba also revealed that 246,391 scored C+ and above in the 2024 KCSE exams  compared to 201,133 students in 2023. He, however, attributed this to the new grading system.

During the ceremony held at the Kenya National Examination Council Offices at Mitihani House South C Nairobi, Ogamba, however, noted that the 2023 candidates were faced with different challenges as they prepared for the exams including COVID-19, floods, and other natural calamities.

Ogamba revealed that 17 subjects including Mathematics Options A and B, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry, recorded an improvement while ten subjects, including English and Home Science, recorded a drop.

For the first time in the 35-year history of KCSE exams, the number of female candidates was more than males standing at 482,202 girls compared to 480,310 boys. A total of 962,512 candidates sat for the exams last year.

A total of 2,829 results of candidates are being withheld to assess irregularities committed while a total of 840 were cancelled due to irregularities.

The CS said the outcome of the probe will be out in 30 days.

91 professionals involved in the exam irregularities will face disciplinary actions and will be charged in court.

The CS stated that among the ways used in 2024 to curb malpractices are a new system new system where exam papers were customized for each candidate’s details.

A total of 30,700 examiners for the marking of the exams in 40 marking centres across the country.

As part of the ongoing reforms, Ogamba said the ministry has introduced mid-year KCSE tests for those who wish to resit the exams or missed previously due to unavoidable circumstances such as sickness.

“Starting this year and following extensive stakeholder consultation, I wish to announce that KNEC will introduce a mid-year series of the KCSE examination. It will target candidates wishing to repeat the examination or who missed sitting for the examinations due to sickness or unexpected hardships,” he said.

The CS has promised to work with the various stakeholders to ensure the full implementation of the proposed reforms.

“I will work with the various stakeholders in the education sector to ensure the proposed reforms are implemented.” Ogamba said.
