NTSA vows to take action after overcrowded matatu carrying learners seen cruising on Thika Road

The incident comes at a time learners are returning to school after the August holidays amid concern over rising road accidents, which have so far claimed over 2,930 people so far this year

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has vowed to take action after a Thika-bound matatu was filmed dangerously cruising along Thika Superhighway while carrying school children who were wearing balaclavas.

Reacting to avoid posted on X by The Informer Media Group, NTSA said it has alerted enforcement officers to take action as it underscored the critical importance and dire need for constant vigilance and adherence to road safety practices for both drivers and passengers.

“This is unacceptable! A split-second lapse in concentration or a poor decision by the driver can have devastating consequences, leading to fatalities or serious injuries. This underscores the critical importance and dire need for constant vigilance and adherence to road safety practices for both drivers and passengers. We have alerted enforcement officers and we will take action,” NTSA said.

The incident comes at a time learners are returning to school after the August holidays amid concern over rising road accidents, which have so far claimed over 2,930 people so far this year.

A total of 27 villagers were recently killed in a tragic accident at Coptic roundabout in Kisumu City, 25 of them on the spot when a school bus ferrying them from a burial lost control due to the poor design of the road that has been described as a blackspot.

President William Ruto subsequently asked traffic enforcers to act swiftly to bring to book those responsible for any acts of negligence leading to the accident and address all traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country.
