NTSA unveils regulations for commercial vehicles

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has unveiled a raft of regulations that is intended for all commercial vehicles in Kenya.

In a statement, the authority said the proposed regulations aim to ensure that all commercial vehicles operating in the country serve well.

According to the draft regulations, all the commercial vehicles should carry with them a first-aid outfit and a fire extinguisher, which is in good condition, can deal with any emergency and are well maintained.

NTSA has also proposed that all commercial vehicles should have at least a third party insurance cover, have a valid vehicle inspection certificate, and have installed a speed limiter conforming to the applicable Kenyan Standard as stipulated by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

It also wants commercial vehicles to install a vehicular telematic system that conforms to the Kenyan Standard as stipulated by the Kenya Bureau of Standards, and have retro reflective contour markings with a minimum width of two inches that conform to the applicable Kenyan Standard as stipulated by the Kenya Bureau of Standards as illustrated in the Second Schedule.

Other regulations are that all commercial vehicles should carry with them efficient fire extinguishers that are well maintained and be placed in a position where they can readily be accessible for use at any time. They should also carry a first aid outfit sufficient to deal with any reasonable emergency.

NTSA says the vehicles need to install protection devices on the rear and side of commercial vehicles where applicable conforming to the applicable Kenyan Standard as stipulated by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
