NTSA acquires 50 new breathalyzers to help curb drink-driving
National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has intensified the campaign against drink- driving by acquiring 50 new breathalyzers which will be distributed to all major towns across the country.
The authority’s deputy director Duncan Kibogong said the newly acquired gadgets will be an addition to those already in use to ensure road safety.
Addressing the press Friday during the launch of the gadgets acquired with the support of the World Bank, Kibogong said accidents on the roads have reduced significantly with war on drink-driving.
“The number of people who have died on the roads from January up to August has dropped compared to the same time last year. Close to 665 people have died so far compared to 716 who lost their lives in 2017,” he said, adding that alcohol impairs a driver’s cognitive ability turning them into a hazard on the road. It impairs vision, judgement sensory ability.
“Our anti-drink-driving operations have deterred many from driving under the influence of alcohol. We have noted a number of revellers opt to take a taxi rather than driving which is very encouraging,” he added.
