November 13 declared national holiday for planting trees

The Kenya’s calendar has gained a new national holiday dubbed ‘National Tree Planting Day’ following gazettement of November 13 as a public holiday by the Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

Through a gazette notice published yesterday, Kindiki said that November 13, 2023, will now stand as an annual public holiday with the aim of growing 15 billion trees.

The Kenya Kwanza administration has a plan to plant 15 billion trees before the end of 2023 to help in the realization of forestry restoration and tackle the adverse effects of Climate change.

President William Ruto tasked the Kenya Forestry Research Institute to set up 18 tree seedling stations across the country to help him achieve his ambition.

“The exercise is part of Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme- towards the growing of 15 billion trees. There will be a designated National venue for the tree planting presided over by His Excellency President William Ruto…and forty-seven County venues, presided over by Cabinet Secretaries and Governors, where all Kenyan citizens and the general public shall be expected to participate.” The gazette notice reads in part.

During the celebration of the World International Day of Forests this Year, president Ruto heeded Kenyans to plant at least 100 trees each either on their Private land or anywhere they can find.

The Ongoing National Exams (KCSE) are set to proceed normally as per the set calendar.
