Northern Rangelands Trust celebrate 20 years of conservation and community empowerment

The Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) today marked its 20th anniversary in a celebratory event in Northern Kenya, where Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, praised the Trust’s efforts in promoting peace, conservation, and community development over the past two decades.

In her address at the Bomas of Kenya, CS Miano lauded the NRT Committee for their resilience in operating in some of Kenya’s most challenging, bandit-prone areas. She acknowledged their role in creating jobs, empowering women, and preserving environmental biodiversity in the northern region.

“The Northern Rangelands Trust has been a beacon of hope for the communities in this region, transforming lives through conservation and empowerment…The Ministry of Tourism pledges its continued support to ensure these efforts not only thrive but expand.” The CS noted.

CS Miano also highlighted plans to leverage the Tourism Promotion Fund to accelerate the development of tourism facilities in several of the 45 conservancies already established by the NRT, further boosting local economies and preserving Kenya’s unique natural heritage.

The Northern Rangelands Trust remains a vital force in community-led conservation, working with local communities to safeguard wildlife and natural resources while fostering sustainable livelihoods.

NRT board chairman Julius Kipngetich, called on the Ministry of Tourism to further invest in northern Kenya’s conservancies by developing unique tourist attractions.

Kipngetich urged Tpurism CS to consider building attractions in the region’s conservancies, which he dubbed “The North,” as a way to spotlight the area’s untapped potential.

“The North holds immense possibilities for eco-tourism and adventure tourism, and I challenge the Ministry to take this opportunity to develop new attractions that will put our conservancies on the global tourism map.” Kipngetich stated.
