NMG apologise retract, apologise over false death announcement

The Nation Media Group’s Daily Nation found itself in an awkward situation after carrying a paid up death announcement of a lady who ‘resurrected’ and denounced the falsified claims.

Daily Nation retracted and apologised over the erroneously published obituary of Rosemary Wekosasa.

The obituary was published on November 14, 2022.

The media company explained that the death announcement was published in reliance upon false information given to it.

“We refer to the publication of a death announcement of Rosemary Wekosasa that was published in the daily nation of November 14, 2022 in reliance upon false information given to the company by her son,” read part of the statement by NMG.

“The company regrets the publication and wishes to apologise to Rosemary Wakosasa, the members of her family not involved in the publication of the notice and members of the public general for the inconvenience, shock and embarrassment that the false notification of death occasioned to them by this unfortunate occurrence,” the company added.

The media company further promised to handle the matter with the relevant authorities.

In May 2019, the High Court in Nairobi had ordered Nation Media Group to pay billionaire Jimmy Wanjigi and his wife Irene Nzisa a total of Sh8 million over a fake obituary advert that claimed he was dead.
