NGO council warns politicians against interfering with presidential petition
The National Council of Non-Governmental Organisations has warned against interference on the ongoing 2017 presidential election petition being determined by the Supreme Court.
The council’s chair Stephen Cheboi today appealed to both sides of the political divide to accord the court “humble time and breathing space” while noting that “unnecessary theatrics” which have been witnessed in the courts precincts might jeopardise the litigation.
“It has come to our attention that some political players have mobilized their supporters to picket outside the precincts of the Supreme Court. This is a recipe for chaos and amounts to meddling and subversion of justice,” said Cheboi while addressing the media.
“We call upon Kenyans to act within parameters stipulated in the law. The Supreme Court is an independent institution mandated by the constitution to give free and fair judgment without undue influence,” added Cheboi.
Accompanied by the council’s directors, Cheboi rallied Kenyans to have trust in the country’s justice system and called for patience as the Supreme Court determines the petition.
He noted that since the opposition National Super Alliance (Nasa) lodged their litigation, wheels of justice have been in motion with no glaring glitches hence there should be no cause for alarm.
Cheboi said, “The Supreme court has given concerned parties enough time to present their submissions for hearing. The exercise has gone on smoothly and with the caliber of lawyers handling the litigation, we should be calm as we await the court’s verdict.”
The council’s concerns come in the wake of several supporters congregating at the courts precincts and even some opposition leaders calling for nightly vigils and prayers, though it remains unclear if it is a ploy to sway the ruling.
