Kirinyaga politician Wangui Ngirici who unsuccessfully vied for Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat has filed a petition seeking the nullification of his political nemesis Anne Waiguru who was re-elected as the county boss on a United Democratic Alliance party ticket.
In the petition filed at the Kerugoya High Court, the former Kirinyaga Woman Representative said that she has gathered enough evidence to prove the just concluded gubernatorial elections were rigged.
Ngirici through her legal team has also sued the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The county returning officer Jane Gitonga, Waiguru, and her deputy David Wachira Githanda are listed as first, second, third, and fourth respondents respectively.
In the August 9 Kirinyaga gubernatorial contest, Waiguru was declared governor after gathering 113,088 votes, Ngirici came second with 105,667 votes while Charles Kiburi emerged third with 22,065 votes.
Other candidates were Safina Party Peter Gitau who garnered 10,166 votes, first Kirinyaga Governor Joseph Ndathi who gathered 3,937 votes on TSP, Muriithi Kagai of Narc-Kenya who gathered 1,751 votes and Chomba Ndau who got 532 votes under a KADU Asili ticket.
During Waiguru’s swearing-in on August 25, she called on her political rivals to unite with the administration and help in the county’s development.
Ngirici was formerly United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party member but later on, resigned and contested for the gubernatorial seat independently after her political rival Waiguru jumped ship to President-elect William Ruto’s side.
