NEMA awarded UN Person of the year 2022
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has today been awarded the United Nations Person of the year.
NEMA was recognised for her effort in promoting and safeguarding the environment in the country and working towards enforcement of plastic bags ban.
Through a statement, NEMA attributed the ban on plastic carrier bags as the key player in working towards the historic plastic resolution adopted by the United Nations (UN) member states during the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).
“The ban on plastic carrier bags was a key player in working towards the historic plastic resolution adopted by UN members’ states during UNEA in March 2022 and was hailed as the biggest moment for the environment since the Paris Agreement,” NEMA stated.
The award was received by the Director General, Mamo B. Mamo accompanied by Chairman Eric Mungai, board members, and the management team at the UN Complex, Gigiri, Nairobi.
NEMA becomes the first government institution in the country to scoop the UN persons of the year award.
