Naivasha residents demand compensation from KPLC for power outage

Residents of Kayole estate in Naivasha have issued a notice to Kenya Power to compensate them over a power surge that destroyed electronic equipment worth thousands of shillings.

The power surge was caused by one of the transformers in the area which malfunctioned blowing up radios, Tv sets, fridges and other gadgets though no one injured.

Following the incident in Lakeview ward, the affected families held a meeting in the estate and issued a one week notice to the power company to compensate them or they would meet in court.

According to area MCA Simon Wanyoike who chaired the meeting, the power company had been taking them in circles since the tragedy occurred.

Wanyoike said that some of the families were living in fear as they were unsure if a similar power surge could reoccur and cause more damage and injuries.

“Officials from Kenya Power are telling area residents to first repair their damaged electronic equipment and they will compensate them and this is illegal,” he said.

One of the affected persons Jared Kihara said that they had visited Kenya Power offices on several occasions but their issue had not been resolved.

“We shall take legal action against Kenya Power for these huge losses which we incurred after the recent power surge in Kayole estate,” he said.
