Nairobi OCS arrested after releasing 64 fuel protest suspects

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Nairobi Central Police Station is under investigation after being arrested over allegations of unlawfully releasing dozens of suspects detained during anti–fuel price protests, in a case now being handled under the National Police Service’s internal disciplinary process.

According to police sources, Chief Inspector Dishen Angoya was arrested by his superiors and detained at Lang’ata Police Station, where he spent the night awaiting further action. The matter is being pursued under Orderly Room Proceedings within the Nairobi command structure led by Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud.

The officer is accused of abuse of office after allegedly releasing 64 suspects on May 18, 2026, without lawful authority. The individuals had been arrested during nationwide protests against rising fuel prices and public order-related offences.

Investigators are now examining whether the release was done within legal procedures or whether it constituted misconduct.

“He is being investigated for allegedly conferring an improper benefit by releasing the detainees without following due procedure,” a police source familiar with the probe said.

However, police sources also noted that OCS officers are legally empowered to grant police bond in bailable offences, meaning the investigation will focus on whether proper procedure was followed in the decision to free the suspects.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions following nationwide demonstrations that saw widespread arrests and disruptions across major towns as protests over fuel prices escalated.
