Nairobi county to lay off 700 NMS staff

The county government of Nairobi is planning to lay off at least 700 workers who were employed by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

In a letter dated February 1,2022, the county government’s Chief Officer for Security and Compliance Tony Kimani said the workers will be relieved of their duties following the expiry of their contract.

“You are requested to release the officers to report to Dagoretti Training College on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 8am. Kindly inform them to carry their working tools, including uniforms, and ceremonial dressings for further instructions,” the letter read.

The letter was copied to Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei and the County Secretary.

The 700 NMS employees were hired in 2021 on a contract of 3 years to fill in the shortage of staff that was experienced in the county.

NMS whose tenure ended last year said when it was recruiting the staffers who will help replace those who had left the service through natural attrition as well as boost the numbers of officers available for service.

NMS was put in place by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to run the affairs of the county.
