Mwamba seeks glory with fourth championship in sight

Their journey to this end has been scintillating having finished top of the table and steamrolled past National Youth Service (NYS) in the semifinals.

Mwamba Women  RFC  take on Impala Women RFC in the finals of the 2024/2025 Kenya Cup Women’s League tomorrow with an eye on a fourth title.

The heavyweight showdown will take place at Mwamba’s home ground, the Goan Institute in Pangani.

For Mwamba, the stakes are nothing short of historic as they play for glory at the new ground. Chasing a fourth consecutive title—a glorious four-peat—the reigning queens of Kenyan Cup women are poised to etch their names further into the annals of the game if they go through the red and white stripes of Impala.

Their journey to this end has been scintillating having finished top of the table and steamrolled past National Youth Service (NYS) in the semifinals. This final, however, carries an extra layer of emotional gravity. It will be the inaugural match at Mwamba’s new home turf, and what better way to christen it than by lifting yet another trophy before a roaring home crowd.

On the other end of the battlefield stands a resurgent Impala RFC. Having finished sixth in the regular season standings, they have defied expectations and clawed their way into the finals with a commanding 28-8 triumph over Kenya Harlequin in the semifinals and they now stand on the cusp of claiming their maiden Kenya Cup title.

This encounter will also rekindle memories of past finals, notably the 2022 and 2023 editions where Mwamba narrowly subdued Impala 15-11 and 21-10 respectively. Those encounters were fierce, unforgiving, and left Impala thirsting for revenge. Now, with another shot at glory, the stage is set for them to either slay their perennial nemesis or fall once more at the final hurdle.

On paper, Mwamba look poised to get through the line but they are not taking any chances with Coach John Oduk warning that Impala will not be pushovers. Mwamba RFC (Kulabu) signed a partnership deal with the institute on December 16 last year, to enable them play their home matches at the venue. This came amid over eight years of homelessness after the club was forced to relocate from their Railways Grounds due to the construction of the Nairobi Green Terminus.
