Mohamud assumes office as EACC boss

Abdi Mohamud has formally taken office as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Chief Executive Officer after a swearing-in ceremony held at the Supreme Court of Kenya today.
Speaking after being sworn-in, Mr. Mohamud said he intends to use three different strategies in order to fight corruption in the country. He said the Anti-corruption commission would ensure that they trace and recover all corruptly acquired assets.
Mohamud, who takes from Twalib Mbarak, takes office for a term of six unrenewable years. He said one of the reasons why the EACC is losing cases was because the DPP was appointing lawyers who are not conversant with the cases.
He urged the Judiciary to help the Commission to rid graft incidences in the country. The Chief Justice, Martha Koome, lauded Mohamud for speaking boldly the problems affecting the work of EACC.
Justice Koome said the judiciary was ready to assist the ethics and anti-corruption commission realise its objective. “In the Judiciary justice is not for sale. I wish to affirm the judiciary’s support to advance justice, accountability and the rule of law,’ Koome said.
Until his appointment, Mohamud was serving as the Commission’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer. Previously, he held the position of Director, Investigations.
Mohamud is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a seasoned investigator with a wealth of experience spanning over 30 years in investigation of corruption and other forms of economic crimes.
He started his career in 1989 as a Cadet Inspector at the Kenya Police Service. Mohamud later joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC), now EACC, in 2005 as a Senior Officer in charge of Rapid Response Division and rose through the ranks to head the Directorate of Investigations.
He has undergone expansive training over the years as a career detective in corruption and economic crimes both locally and internationally with various distinguished law enforcement agencies.
As the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, he was responsible for deputizing the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of EACC in the discharge of his statutory, administrative and policy responsibilities in the daily operations and management of the Commission.
He was charged, as the head of the Directorate of Investigations, with managing and coordinating investigations and he has been instrumental in investigation of several high profile cases in Kenya and beyond.
He was honoured with the Head of State Commendation; Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.) in December 2016 for his eminent role in the fight against corruption.
He holds a Master of Science Degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, Bachelor of Laws Degree from Mt. Kenya University and Professional Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
