MKU chancellor urge institutions to preach peace as over 6,000 student graduate today
Mount Kenya University (MKU) Chancellor, Professor John Struthers has urged organisations and individuals to preach peace as a prerequisite for development.
The don, who is in the country to physically preside over MKU’s 21st Graduation Ceremony today, he has also urged institutions to cultivate partnerships that help them achieve their mandates, and to navigate challenges such as the Covid-19 that disrupted learning worldwide.
“Businesses and individuals can only thrive socially and economically in peaceful environments,” says Struthers.
Struthers has lauded the participation of various local and international institutions in the conference.
“At a time such as this, partnerships are absolutely vital, and therefore, I congratulate the university for its partnerships with county governments, the National Government and with continental and international organisations,” says Struthers.
More than 6,000 students are expected to graduate from MKU today with certificates, diplomas, degrees and postgraduate qualifications, including Master’s and doctorates.
MKU is holding the graduation under the theme, “The Role of Universities in Peace Building for Socio-Economic Development”.
Today’s graduation ceremony comes two months since the university hosted its Second International Conference on Peace, Security and Social Enterprise at the main campus in Thika.
MKU has been the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) SDG 10 Hub on Reduce Inequalities since last year.
Prof Mark Charlton of De Montfort University, England, and the Overseer of the UNAI SDG 16 Hub on Peace and Justice and Strong Institutions, was a keynote speaker during the Second International Conference on Peace, Security and Social Enterprise.
