Migori ID nightmare as voter listing continues

Migori residents crying foul of double standards at  the national ID registration  offices.

As  the  ongoing  second phase of the  voter registration exercise  is almost coming to a closure, hundreds of Migori residents  who have not yet registered  are  accusing  the local administrators  of sabotaging their efforts to exercise their  democratic rights.

A section of  those who have not registered  said that  they  have  not done so  due to lack of  the national  identity card  which is a  prerequisite  for  one to register as a  voter.

They said that the local administrators have been a stumbling block   for   those   who have been attempting to   obtain the ID cards.

Some said the  chiefs and their assistants solicit for bribes  from applicants  and those  who  can’t  meet their demands  are not attended to, something which  has  left many  people stranded  in the  region.

A spot check done by the media today revealed that thousands of those who turned up today  for the national ID cars  vetting exercise  by the  local administrators were  not attended to  as  the chiefs  and their assistants  are alleged  to have  been  out  of office, on  personal commitments .

Mary Atieno, who have been  following   up  on the issue of her ID for  three months  says that  has always been  looking for her chief to stamp  her application  but all in vain.  The   officers responsible for the exercise, she says have been   telling her to keep waiting, all she seems to have  lost hope, just  like many .

James odede, who has also been   struggling to   replace  his lost identity card   since  april  last year   is  also a frustrated  man. Despite   having met all the requirements, he has not succeeded in obtaining the ID card. The local   administrators   here he says, have  put  double standards for anyone  applying  for the national id card.
