Michael Muchiri named new police spokesman as Adamson Bungei redeployed

Kiambu Police Commander Michael Nyaga Muchiri is the new police spokesperson in new changes announced by the Inspector General of Police.

Nyaga takes over from Resila Onyango who has been named the Commandant of the Diplomatic Police Unit.

Resila took over from Bruno Shioso in 2022 becoming the first woman with a PhD to hold the position.

She was the second policewoman to serve in the position after Zipporah Mboroki served in the same capacity in 2014.

Previously, Resila served as the Deputy Director of Administration and Planning at NPS since 2021.

The Coast Regional Police Commander George Sedah takes over as the new Nairobi police boss, replacing Adamson Bungei, who will now serve as Director of Operations at Vigilance House.

The former Nairobi police boss takes over from William Yiampoy, whose next assignment remains unclear.

Bungei has been in the spotlight with the Opposition and human rights groups accusing him of ordering the use of excessive force against protesters in the last two years and, especially, during the Gen Z mass action in June and July last year when several youth were shot dead.

In the new changes, Kwale Police Commander Ali Nuno takes the Coast Regional Police Commander, with hopes of addressing Mombasa’s gang-related challenges.

Other notable changes announced by the National Police Service include Mwangi Wanderi, formerly head of the National Forensics Laboratory has been appointed the Director of Human Capital at Vigilance House.

Rosemary Kuraru will now lead the National Forensics Laboratory.

Also, Judy Jebet has been appointed the new Head of Community Policing, replacing John Gachomo as Daniel Korir moves to command the Kenya Airports Police Unit (KAPU).

Michael Sang has been named the new Eastern Regional Director of Criminal Investigations Head.

Inspector General Douglas Kanja described these changes as routine, aimed at enhancing service operations.
