Met Department issues weather shifts in the country

Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert to residents of Nairobi, Kisumu, Kiambu, Nyeri, and Nakuru counties to prepare for showers over the next five days as the regional climate body warns of below-normal rainfall in some parts of the country.

The weather advisory as seen by Informer Media covers the period running January 25-29. It goes ahead to outline expectations for showers in at least 36 counties over the coming five days. However, high temperatures are also expected in the follow up days.

In the website report, the Meteorological Department forecasts that the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka, will receive showers in the afternoon and night though not as intense.

The showers are expected over the five days, with temperatures forecast to hit a high of 28°Celsius with lows of 08°Celsius over the five days. Many parts of the country will remain sunny and dry, with temperatures in some parts of Nyanza expected to reach 31°C over the next five days.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the broader Rift Valley region—the counties of Kisumu, Kisii, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Busia, among others—will experience scattered rains throughout the five days.

Coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale are set to remain mostly dry during the day, with occasional night cloudiness. Residents should brace for high daytime temperatures exceeding 35°C, particularly in some coastal, south-eastern, and northern regions.

In the south-eastern lowlands of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, Kenya Met predicts showers over the five days in the afternoon and night.

However, morning showers are to be expected from Monday to Wednesday. At the same time, nights are also expected to have high temperatures hitting 34 °C with lows of 15°C.

The outlook for January 2025 indicates that most parts of the country will experience predominantly dry weather conditions. However, a few areas, such as the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central and Southern Rift Valley, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern lowlands, and the Coastal strip, are likely to receive occasional rainfall.

In the outlook study for the next three months, sunny and dry weather conditions are expected to dominate most parts of the country. However, a few areas in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Central and Southern Rift Valley, as well as the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Coastal region, and the Southeastern lowlands, may experience occasional rainy days during the forecast period. This rainfall is likely to spread to several places in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and Central and Southern Rift Valley by March.
